Project Description

A topic held at PaperPad asked contributors to update a famous cartoon or illustration character in their own style. Certain characteristics or settings should remain the same in an effort to retain the character's essence, but the real challenge was to create a newly realized interpretation of an already famous individual.

Personal Thoughts

I was actually quite happy with how these guys turned out. They don't look like the original characters at all, but I took this illustration challenge as an opportunity to really let go of restrictions and draw what I saw in my head. Using an existing character as inspriation was a great start to this piece as it allowed me to focus on the look and feel of the piece instead of worrying too much about what I would actually illustrate. Small dwarvish men and mushrooms was all I needed to include to connect to the original smurfs.
