Editorial Layout/Illustration
Project Description
An example of editorial layout, this project was developed as a challenging test in designing an attractive editorial article. The number of pages was restricted, despite the lengthy article copy, so clever page design was required. An attention-grabbing opening DPS was mandatory, further limiting options for interior pages and necessitating slick design void of unnecessary clutter.
Personal Thoughts
Creating a dynamic illustration for the opening spread was the first challenge. The article's content discusses the negative impacts resulting from the introduction of computers into our school systems. The finalized illustration depicts a pedestal of traditional school supplies, most importantly textbooks, becoming shaky and falling apart because of the computer placed upon them. From here, the lengthy content needed to be addressed. This proved to be suprisingly challenging due to the awkward structure of the original article. In the end, a calmer layout with suggestions of editorial pull-outs and sidebars was selected as the best solution for this design challenge.
