Fame Game

Project Description

A large and critically important part of the Honours degree for Communication Design at NSCAD University. is a written thesis as well as a designed piece showcased in year-end exhibition in the fourth year of study. The thesis and designed piece must pertain to a topic related to Communication Design as well as a theme chosen yearly for the graduating students to work within. The 2007 theme was 'image' and all written and designed material was an interpretation. The game can be seen in context of the exhibition HERE.

(see Thesis Exhibition for more information.)

Game Details

The Fame Game resulted from my written thesis document detailing the often critically discussed obsession our society has for the image of celebrity. The board game is a tongue-in-cheek representation of many people's frenzied pursuit of elusive celebrity status and comments on the modern idea of fame by including several potential degrees of celebrity for players including movie star, reality TV personality, heiress or heir, talent show competitor, and internet blogger. Players are required to make several career choices throughout the game that, based on a roll of the dice, will determine whether their star will continue to rise, or if their career has gone off track, requiring them to fight their way back to the top. Career choices which may suddenly cause a slip in one's career include drunk driving, adultery, botched plastic surgery, and rehab. Alternatively, careers can also run smoothly as players are rewarded star cards for good deeds, charity work, public services, endorsement deals, and increased fan bases. Ultimately, the player whose career has hit the fewest snags and who has collected the most star cards, wins.
