Pistachio and Parrot

It’s been a long, snowed-in weekend. I was having a hard time being creative with so I went through an old sketchbook to find something worth painting. Luckily, I happened upon a sketch for the Dress-Up series I worked on last year. The first three images from the series have already been posted in the Portfolio section of the site and this new fella will join them shortly. Following my trend of naming the characters after different types of nuts, (Pecan, Peanut and Cashew so far) I decided to name this guy Pistachio.

Illustration Case Study:
“Self Portrait”

Yesterday I was having an intense desire to paint, but also fighting the urge to lay on the couch and go to bed early. Those conflicting moods made it hard to be overly creative and I figured doing a self-portrait would be a nice, easy challenge for the evening. I used to hate doing these while in school so it’s been years since I’ve done one. This one was certainly the most painless.

Photoshop Experimenting:
Funky Retro Laser Backgrounds

A friend recently asked me if I wanted to try creating some fun backgrounds for a huge festival she’s planning. Of course I jumped at the chance. These laser images are the product of a few hours of intense Photoshop experimenting. Can’t wait to see the finals printed at full-size. They’re going to be huge!
New Children’s Book in Progress
“You Are Sooooo Beautiful!”

While I was still in school I always said I wanted to illustrate a children’s book. In the last year I’ve done three! Funny how that works out.
These are a few of my favorite images from a soon-to-published children’s book I’m currently working on at the studio. Much like the previous two books, the illustration style is quite different from what I typically work in which has allowed for a lot of experimentation.

Out with the Old…
Soon to be in With the New

I’m in the process of redesigning the imagery of the site again. This constant restlessness and desire for change is why I would never be able to get a tattoo. I get bored too quickly.
People always say it’s most difficult to do design work for yourself and I’d have to agree. I have a really hard time with it. The past few website designs just weren’t cutting it for me, and while this one isn’t quite finished yet, I already feel like it’s heading the right way. It’s a lot cleaner, incorporates some custom patterns, and best of all, puts a fierce Geisha front and centre… or at the top and to the right… Hopefully by chipping away at it over time I’ll end up with something that really works for me in the end, but already I’m pretty happy with the results.
